What is E5 petrol?
E5 is petrol containing up to 5% ethanol. Since standard unleaded moved to E10 in 2021, E5 in the UK is normally sold as super unleaded, a higher-octane grade of 97 RON or above.
Which cars need E5 instead of E10?
Most cars built since the early 2000s run happily on E10. Some older vehicles, classics, and certain small-engined machines are not E10-compatible and should use E5. The government runs an official E10 compatibility checker if you are unsure about your vehicle.
Why is super unleaded more expensive?
It is a higher-octane grade with a bigger additive package, sold in smaller volumes than standard unleaded. Expect to pay noticeably more per litre, and expect the gap to vary a lot between forecourts, which is why comparing before you drive matters more for E5 than for standard petrol.
